The two greatest staples of an online presence are a website and a Facebook page. It’s something we can’t escape from nowadays, but that’s far from a bad thing:

Both platforms offer plenty of opportunities (and tools) to show potential clients why they should hire you.

Why you should have a proper website

A good website is more than an add-on to your business — having a proper website instead of relying solely on a Facebook page greatly increases your chances of being found online. It demands more presence and gives a much more professional outlook to your business.

What makes a good website?

Clean mobile-ready design. It’s the rule now — every website MUST be mobile-ready. The majority of people navigate on their phone and a mobile-friendly website is obligatory.

Post a few jobs you’ve done. Use high-quality and well-taken pictures. You don’t need to publish every job, just update it every once in a while to keep the website alive. By the way, you can take amazing high-quality pictures with your phone.

Simple pages. This is supposed to be a welcoming space into your business and your work, so keep it simple and to the point, avoiding unnecessary fluff, flashy animations, and unrelated advertisements.

The about page. if you’re not very good at writing, hire a writer to compose a few short paragraphs about your company’s story — it won’t cost you much. If at all possible, have a nice picture of you and/or your team there too. People identify with people.

Reviews. Ask your clients to leave reviews and display them on your website — seriously, it makes all the difference.

Where can I create a website like this?

You can hire a web-designer for awesome results with a custom design — although it will cost more, it’s definitely worth considering.

Alternatively, to save you time and money, you can take the DIY route and create your own website with a service like Squarespace. A

ll you have to do is choose a template (from a gallery of hundreds) and edit text and images — as simple as that. And they offer a compromise-free trial for 7 days, so you have plenty of time to try it out.

Let’s talk about your Facebook page

Never underestimate the power of a Facebook page. As common as they are, they still offer fantastic tools to work with. Remember — Facebook is the biggest social network in the world with currently over 2 billion monthly users. It’s good to be in there.

But beyond the sheer size of its audience, what matters most are the awesome business tools Facebook lets you use for free.

So create a page if you haven’t already. People often use Facebook to look for local companies and check their credibility. Plus, your company will be found on Google much easier. As will your website.

Post something once a week, at least. No need for complicated social marketing here — if your business is local, simply publish something new every week to show the page is alive. Recent projects, a holiday message, anything as long as it’s work-related.

You can use Canva to compose beautiful images for social media in the perfect format (it’s free!)

Make sure your contact information is up-to-date. No one likes calling old phones, sending emails that never get answered, or hitting up the wrong address. Have all of those — including business hours — always updated.

Always answers questions. The time of response for each page is displayed for page visitors, so take a few moments to answer questions every day. If people see you answer quickly, they’re much more inclined to get in touch.

Reviews! Anyone can leave a review of your business on Facebook. Encourage clients to do so, and on the odd occasion of a bad review, be sure to reply and show effort to find a middle ground. Misunderstandings happen, and people are willing to forgive if you make amends. Besides, not looks worse than an unattended bad review.
