This week is a big holiday week as people nationwide are celebrating...you guessed it, National Strawberry Sundae Day! Ok, so maybe this national holiday doesn’t get the hype of some bigger national holidays in July (here’s looking at you, National Cheesecake Day), but it’s every bit as worth celebrating - and every bit as tasty, too. From a shortcake sundae to strawberry sorbet, this holiday deserves to be shared with family and friends, indulging in a sweet treat (or two!). Start with a backyard BBQ, if you want, or simply gather for sweet treats (or strawberry sundae-inspired drinks) and backyard games, and definitely check out our recommendations for treats below.
Simple Strawberry Sundae
Probably the easiest (and still delicious) way to make a strawberry sundae is to scoop a few scoops of the ice cream of your choosing (vanilla and chocolate both work well) and top them with this delicious, homemade Strawberry Sauce. Especially good when made with fresh-picked strawberries (pick-your-own or farmer’s market), the topping only requires a few ingredients but is definitely an upgrade on any store-bought sauce or sundae topping. Plus, any leftover after National Strawberry Sundae Day can be spread over pancakes the next morning - yum!
Homemade Strawberry Ice Cream
Whether you like rainbow sprinkles or chocolate sauce on your sundae is totally up to you, but what kind of list of strawberry sundae recipes would this be if we didn’t throw in at least one recipe for homemade strawberry ice cream? With this rich, creamy, tasty recipe for a strawberry ice cream base, you can create your favorite kind of sundae with whatever toppings you like. In fact, we suggest spending some time in the kitchen to whip up a big batch of this ice cream, then set up a sundae station with everyone’s favorite toppings.
Homemade Strawberry Sorbet
Not exactly a typical strawberry sundae, homemade sorbet can be a sweet treat to celebrate the day for any of your guests who can’t eat dairy. Not to mention the fact that this recipe for strawberry sorbet is super delicious, along with being quick, easy, and only using 4 ingredients. Top the sorbet with more chunks of strawberries, vegan chocolate chips, or even slices of banana for a banana-split type take on a strawberry sundae.
Strawberry Shortcake Sundae
National Strawberry Sundae Day is the perfect opportunity to combine two of our favorite things - strawberry shortcake and strawberry sundaes. With this recipe for a Strawberry Shortcake Sundae, you get the warm flakiness of homemade shortcake combined with the sweet creaminess of ice cream and honey-warmed deliciousness of the strawberry topping - what more could you want?
Ice Cream Sundae with Champagne-Soaked Strawberries
If you’re looking for a bit of a fancier strawberry sundae recipe, this one is for you. Served in cinnamon-sugar-rimmed martini glasses and with a piece of a waffle cookie for visual appeal, this recipe for an Ice Cream Sundae with Champagne Soaked Strawberries is for you. Plus, you can make an easy alternative for little ones enjoying the ice cream by using sparkling apple cider instead of champagne. Bon appetit!
Strawberry Rum Sundae Drink
If ice cream on its own isn’t your first choice but you’re still looking to celebrate this national holiday, why not try a strawberry sundae inspired drink? This Strawberry Rum Sundae uses fresh strawberries, vanilla ice cream, and strawberry rum (along with pineapple juice and ice) to create a drink that’s so rich and creamy you won’t even need a sundae in a bowl! Top with an extra scoop of ice cream, chocolate syrup, whipped cream and extra strawberries for an even fancier treat.
