The holidays are upon us! There is a lot of work to be done and you have to find time in between all of that to wrap up the year and spend time with your family – all without going insane. It’s a tall order, but perfectly possible if we stay organized.
To that end, here are the best tips for working through the holidays so that you have time to do everything, including your well-deserved rest!
Organize your tasks
Might seem obvious, but with the amount of stuff to do at this time of the year, I highly recommend making a list of all your tasks.
You can use any list-making app for this, but a simple notebook and pen will do just fine. I’m prone to Evernote and Trello, as I’ve mentioned many times before.
This will ensure you have a clear idea of what to do every day or week, since things can pile up quickly. Besides, quite often it seems like you have way more to do in your head than in reality, so when you put it all in a list it makes your days much easier to plan.
Take care of yourself
Don’t forget to take care of yourself amidst the chaos. Drink water, eat well, and get some sleep! You gain no advantage from depriving yourself of rest and self-care, in fact, quite the opposite.
At the very least, set a reminder to drink water a few times a day and take a handy water bottle with you to work. Makes it much easier to remember!
Avoid multitasking
I’m starting to sound like a broken record, but the people must know: multitasking does absolutely nothing for you. Whenever you have a lot of things to take care of, it might seem like a good idea to do all of them at once, but this will only slow you down while stressing you out.
It’s scientifically proven that multitasking does not make you more productive. If you find yourself full of things to do at once, it’s either because you’re mismanaging your time or someone put way too much work on your shoulders – but the solution isn’t to overwork yourself trying to do everything.
Instead, focus on better time and project management!
Be positive
It can be stressful for a lot of people out there, so if you can bring an ounce of positivity with you to work, you should! We are social creatures by nature and seeing a smile in your face will spread joy amongst your co-workers.
Make time for family
The whole point of the holiday season is to spend time with the family. The best way to ensure this is to plan ahead – use your task list to make sure you have enough time to spend with your family.
And when you do, keep work off the table! This is why it’s important to plan ahead. You will have a much better time hanging out with the most important people in your life and with peace of mind knowing that work is taken care of.
Plan some time off for this month
Business owners don’t often get a vacation, or at least, they feel like they’re not entitled to. There’s this weird mentality that entrepreneurs don’t have the right to rest because of some arbitrary reason – like the fact Elon Musk doesn't take vacations.
Well, let me break it down for you: Elon Musk’s net worth is almost 300 billion dollars. I’m sure he’s a hard worker and all, but if you were the owner of some of the biggest companies in the world and had billions of dollars lying around, you’d probably also be ok with not taking a break. That’s not a reality for most of us.
We have to earn our pennies and it greatly bothers me when billionaires try to promote this idea that sacrificing your mental health and time off is the secret to success. It’s not!
So take your time off. You deserve it and it’s good for you.
Celebrate your co-workers
Finally, don’t forget to thank your co-workers! Whether it’s a team or your freelance buddies, you often interact more with them than with your family at home. You’re partners and that ought to be celebrated.
If you can, organize a simple celebration at work during a chill day so that everyone can enjoy some time together without talking about work. They will be most thankful for it!
