Every year dictionaries, trend forecasting companies, and organizations choose the words and expressions that stand out in the media and public in general.
This year, among the Oxford Dictionary finalists was the Danish word hygge ( pronounced hoo-guh ), defined as “a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.”
Although it doesn’t have a direct translation to English, it is very close to our term “cozy”, but it’s also associated with “calm”, “gratification” and “appreciation”. That’s where the word “Hug” comes from.
In 2016, six books were published in the United States alone about this concept of Scandinavian coziness.
It’s easy to understand how hygge has a lot do with winter: blankets, fireplaces, warm drinks, cuddling on the couch and woven clothing. But then the word can be used at the same time as a noun, an adjective or as a verb. As the term expands, it’s easy to foresee even compound nouns being created.
A doctor may recommend a specific medication plus hygge, as the cure for a certain cold. You may hear someone telling you they will hygge alone on the weekend.
In a world reaching unprecedented levels of stress, sitting back, relaxing and contemplating become prevailing. It makes sense that the word hygge has been propagated so intensely as a lifestyle adding tenderness and warmth across the globe.
British-Danish writer Louisa Thomsen Brits says that “hygge is a state of mindfulness, making daily tasks dignified and joyful.” In that she makes the concept sound very close to “zen.”
Whether used to describe a lifestyle, a concept or simply as an adjective, it is more a mental state rather than a physical one and it certainly has to do with creating intimacy.
Enjoying the little things in life will definitely benefit our so fast-paced society. In order to help you hygge this winter at home (of course you can, and must hygge at any time of the year), here are some valuable tips.
Shop for Candles
Realize the energy and warmth of a candle light. Either scented or unscented, candles have the power of transforming any environment. In the winter, lighting a candle has almost an anthropological meaning.
Invest in Texture
Soft textures alter the interior dimensions of the home. Consider knit cushions, woolen rugs and fur throws. In fact, cashmere and wool items are a decor trend for the upcoming year.
Remember that Simple Things Are Hygge
It isn’t necessary to completely transform your home decor in order to get hyggeligt. Since it is more closely related to state of mind, taking a long bath, cuddling with your kids and pets, toasting pine nuts and savoring coffee or tea will lift your mood instantly.
Get Comfortable Loungewear
Once you get home from the office, get comfortable. Nowadays it has become easy to be comfy and stylish at the same time, with so many brands offering so many options. Express yourself through your loungewear, just don’t forget about hygge.
Hygge With the People You Like
Hygge is more closely related to enjoying life with friends than it is with spending time alone. Of course that wouldn’t be the case when you’re reading a book or maybe even watching a movie. But it is wrong to think that this the hygge norm (remember where the word “hug” comes from?).
So there is nothing more hyggeligt than having friends around the fireplace, drinking tea or eggnog, eating nourishing food. Also remember that hygge isn’t necessarily associated with hanging indoors. You can hygge at parks, warm cafes, at the backyard or on the porch.
