If you’re looking for a reliable, competent, professional electrician, DO NOT use Abex. Horrible communication throughout the duration of the project - except, of course, for when he wanted to be paid. He left exposed, mangled wires hanging down from the ceiling of the laundry room, didn’t tell the contractor to repair the walls he carved out to access the wires, and claimed the reason our doorbell stopped working after he cut open the walls was because the wires were “oxidized.” We had a list of over a dozen items he didn’t finish but we couldn’t get a hold of him for weeks. He finally shows up in an email one day, claiming to be finished with our project and handing over a $4K bill. After several emails back and forth, he finally agreed to finish the job. Except he didn’t. He finished 2 out of the remaining 4 items. And after he and his crew left, the garage door was broken and the rubber strip on the bottom was torn. When I told him we wouldn’t pay the final balance unless he paid for the garage door repair, he threatened to call the town and get a lean out on my elderly parents’ house. Disgraceful. Incompetent. Unprofessional.
This really only matters if you have a preference, but it is good to ask. If you have a strong ideological belief about unions or nonunions, it's perfectly acceptable to make a decision based on the preference.
Many jobs in New York will require municipal permits in order to be approved by the town's inspector. It's always good to ask who will be responsible for pulling those permits, and if you'll be expected to do it. You'll almost never be told to pull your own, but knowing that Oceanside Electrical permits are required makes you appear to be a well informed customer.
You'll certainly want to ask them this. Steer clear of any company that is not insured in New York, because that means that any incidental damage they may do on your property will be a real hassle to recover compensation for. It is never wise to work with uninsured tradesmen of any kind. Most states also require that someone have insurance in order to be issued a trade license. If they say they're licensed but not insured, they're being less than truthful.
Always ask for references, and always check them. Keep in mind though that the only references you'll get are people who the contractor is certain will give him a good review. You'd also be well advised to check online review sources in Oceanside as well, which will give you a broader view of customer satisfaction for a given company.
