After the recent and unexpected snow here in Idaho Falls, our crabapple tree was toast. Branches were broken and/or sweeping the ground. When we moved here 6 years ago, the center of the tree was missing which, we were told, was "probably" due to a fungus of some sort. (After the recent early October snow, we now realize that it was probably due to snow). Over the past years we had tried, unsuccessfully, to get a "professional" service to trim and shape the tree and had given up hope that it would look decent. After this year's snow event, we were on the verge of having the darned thing taken out but our community landscaper (American Yards) suggested we give Advantage a call. They came out within 24 hours, said they could fix us up (very reasonably priced) by the end of the week...and they did exactly that. The tree is beautiful, and there are still more than enough crabapples left to keep the Cedar Waxwings and Downy woodpeckers happy in January. Office phone number is 208-525-8733...

Best Questions to Ask a Landscaping Contractors Contractor

Are you union or non-union?

This really only matters if you have a preference, but it is good to ask. If you have a strong ideological belief about unions or nonunions, it's perfectly acceptable to make a decision based on the preference.

Do you have any references that I can contact?

Always ask for references, and always check them. Keep in mind though that the only references you'll get are people who the contractor is certain will give him a good review. You'd also be well advised to check online review sources in Idaho Falls as well, which will give you a broader view of customer satisfaction for a given company.

What guarantees and/or warranties can you give me? Are you a warranty agent for any brands?

These first two questions should only relate to services or good purchased directly from the service provider. Many products carry their own warranties, like roofing shingles or siding. It's useful to know what these warranties cover as well as how long they last. The "warranty agent" question is important, because often warranty agents work with the manufacturer to get you repairs under warranty at a much lower price.

Do you hire properly documented Landscaping workers?

This will be answered when you ask if all employees are licensed. The only way to obtain a legitimate tradesman's license is to be a legal or naturalized citizen of the US. The company may employ people in positions that don't require a license, however, so it's wise to inquire.

How many contractors do you have working for you? How many vehicles are in your fleet?

This is important mostly for larger jobs. Clearly a two man operation is going to build a home much slower than a 15 man crew. This is also a good indication of the overall size of the Landscaping company, if that's an area of concern for you. The reason you may want to ask about the fleet is that fleet size is a good indicator of the mobility of the company. Mobility may not sound important, but it's hard for the Idaho Falls contractors to get to job sites if they lack appropriate vehicles.
