We used Herb's many times for ceiling work in our home with no problem. He sent his painter out to paint in our new home. Painter did a poor job, was hired to cover water spot and it was still visible when he left. Also poorly cut in. Herb returned, blamed the cut in on the previous painter (prior, ceiling & walls were the same color, new paint was white, so the new lines were pretty obvious). Told me he didn't come out to quote the job, then said he DID come but no one lived there and he was alone in the house (water spot happened after we moved in, we were definitely there when someone from his company quoted). He became irate and stormed out of our home. I let him know I would leave him a review. Very disappointed as we were satisfied in the past, but if you have a problem, watch out. He will blame you and will not fix it. Now we are hiring another painter to fix this mess.
This will be answered when you ask if all employees are licensed. The only way to obtain a legitimate tradesman's license is to be a legal or naturalized citizen of the US. The company may employ people in positions that don't require a license, however, so it's wise to inquire.
Though a standard question, it's important to ask. Most contractors will tell you how long they expect the job to take without you asking. If they don't volunteer that information, be sure to ask. It's also helpful to ask if that's a hard finish date, meaning that it's the definite finish date. If it's a soft finish date, it may be extended for any number of reasons.
Many jobs in Indiana will require municipal permits in order to be approved by the town's inspector. It's always good to ask who will be responsible for pulling those permits, and if you'll be expected to do it. You'll almost never be told to pull your own, but knowing that Mishawaka Drywall permits are required makes you appear to be a well informed customer.
You'll always want to ask how long the company has been in business in Mishawaka. While this isn't a guarantee that the company will do good work, companies with longevity on their side must be doing something right. That being said, there are newer companies that do great work. If the company is under three years old, ask where the owner was employed before and for how long. If he/she has a long history of employment, it's reasonable to infer that he or she decided to go into business for themselves after so many years of experience.
