We worked with Holden on a major remodel of our house in Mill Valley, had worked with him on a bathroom remodel before that and continued to work with him as an expert advisor after. We’re moving out of the area and will soon start a big project on our new house elsewhere. I wish we could bring him with. He’s great. He’s committed to craft, thorough, experienced, expert. He’s direct, honest and careful in his communication and fun to work with. He’s good people. He also brings only good people with them. His subs all came through and were easy to work with, and his own crew are real artisans and a pleasure to have around the house. We were at the house during a lot of the project, so we spent a lot of time with them during the work – got to see up close the care they put into their work as well as how they work with each other. Bumps along the way, as any big or even medium-sized project is bound to encounter at some point, were handled professionally and personally. We’re grateful to have met him.
Many jobs in California will require municipal permits in order to be approved by the town's inspector. It's always good to ask who will be responsible for pulling those permits, and if you'll be expected to do it. You'll almost never be told to pull your own, but knowing that Mill Valley Additions and Remodels permits are required makes you appear to be a well informed customer.
This really only matters if you have a preference, but it is good to ask. If you have a strong ideological belief about unions or nonunions, it's perfectly acceptable to make a decision based on the preference.
This is very important, since an estimate is just that. Many contractors will submit a "paper estimate", meaning they've written the estimate down on paper. The bill is the true amount owed and will almost always say "Invoice" or "Bill" at the top of the page. The bill should also list the date it was issued, the due date of payment, and a list of services rendered.
These first two questions should only relate to services or good purchased directly from the service provider. Many products carry their own warranties, like roofing shingles or siding. It's useful to know what these warranties cover as well as how long they last. The "warranty agent" question is important, because often warranty agents work with the manufacturer to get you repairs under warranty at a much lower price.
