About this pro

At Hollister Michaels, we’re more than just a custom homebuilder; we’re creators of personal spaces. To truly bring a client’s vision to life, it takes a serious eye for detail. You won’t find this characteristic in just any builder. It’s something that is cultivated over time like it has been for owner and masterbuilder, Mike Usalavage.

Mike’s careful attention to detail has been passed down from generation to generation. Being a fourth generation homebuilder, he’s honed his craft not only after 25+ years of his own experience, but has borrowed from the experiences of those in his family who have handcrafted beautiful homes before him.

Best Questions to Ask a Remodeler Contractor

Are you insured and/or bonded for Additions and Remodels?

You'll certainly want to ask them this. Steer clear of any company that is not insured in Colorado, because that means that any incidental damage they may do on your property will be a real hassle to recover compensation for. It is never wise to work with uninsured tradesmen of any kind. Most states also require that someone have insurance in order to be issued a trade license. If they say they're licensed but not insured, they're being less than truthful.

Does the Additions and Remodels job require permits? If so, will you be pulling them yourself?

Many jobs in Colorado will require municipal permits in order to be approved by the town's inspector. It's always good to ask who will be responsible for pulling those permits, and if you'll be expected to do it. You'll almost never be told to pull your own, but knowing that Denver Additions and Remodels permits are required makes you appear to be a well informed customer.

Do you hire properly documented Additions and Remodels workers?

This will be answered when you ask if all employees are licensed. The only way to obtain a legitimate tradesman's license is to be a legal or naturalized citizen of the US. The company may employ people in positions that don't require a license, however, so it's wise to inquire.

How long have you been in Additions and Remodels business for/How long have been serving the Denver area?

You'll always want to ask how long the company has been in business in Denver. While this isn't a guarantee that the company will do good work, companies with longevity on their side must be doing something right. That being said, there are newer companies that do great work. If the company is under three years old, ask where the owner was employed before and for how long. If he/she has a long history of employment, it's reasonable to infer that he or she decided to go into business for themselves after so many years of experience.
