Our 18 yr. old furnace stopped working mid winter. Our oil supplier had our service contract dates mixed up and indeed the furnace had missed a few cleanings. Our stalled furnace upon inspection was found to be very dirty , however after a great deal of banging around beneath the house, replacing parts and a solid cleaning got it up and working again. Unfortunately, a strong, stale ash-y smell began to fill the house in certain areas. We were convinced by our local HVAC contractor the old unit had cracked, causing the smell and that we needed to install a brand new furnace. The smell continued in earnest as soon as the new furnace was switched on. It is hard to locate in this old house where the source of the smell was. We had another HVAC contractor take a look and he was convinced the draw on the new furnace was weak and convinced us that the new unit was not pushing the exhaust out of the chimney and therefore it was backing up into the house. We made sure furnace flue was cleaned, agreed to install a “fan-in-a-can” and replace a few damaged pieces of duct. However, when installing the new ductwork they had their first good look down one of the main central ducts and found the ductwork was thick with dust and dirt etc. The new pre-filter that was installed was completely packed with dust in only a week. They strongly recommended that we have our ducts cleaned as the smell had still not gone away. At this time, what had begun in late January was still being worked on Wednesday, April 12th when the new areas of ductwork installed. We agreed to all this work with each new contractor with the idea that this would finally remove our odor problem. However, as of today, and even when then the furnace is completely inactive for over 24 hours, as it was over the Easter weekend; the same smell which our vet says may be responsible for our pet’s new wheezing, possibly a sign of environmentally caused asthma, the stale ash-y odor just seems to have settled into our house and we’re hoping a good duct cleaning will solve our problems. So it’s pretty accurate to say this has us at our wit’s end. Our HVAC man Bill Smith does not clean ducts, but now has a strong feeling that if we can find a company that can thoroughly clean our ductwork we’ll get a break from the odors. We’ve also been told we probably need to have our return and supply ducts inspected and cleaned as well. The smells are very strong in certain parts of the house, not so strong in others. we need a talented technician to help us pin down the source of the odor. We now wonder if soot from the old cracked furnace combined with the large amounts of dust, dander. and other debris that was discovered last week in the ductwork to produce this strong, stale ash-y smell. It has become impossible to spend much time in the living room since, especially during the evening the air smells awful in parts of the house. We hope you can solve this problem which become more chronic with each passing week. We hope after a good thorough duct cleaning that our problems might finally be over.
