A traumatized war veteran takes a plane to try to convince his ex-girlfriend of his love, but among many hilarious occurrences, the pilot of the airplane faints due to food poisoning and our clumsy war-veteran is the only one who can save the day.
The spoof comedy to rule them all. Before the tiring trope of “Scary Movie 5” (or whatever the last one was), there was actual thought and care put into a spoof comedy. “Airplane!” makes fun of disaster movies from the ‘80s, but not by mentioning stuff from other movies and hoping that will get a laugh - it has its own plot and an infinity of original quotable lines.

Bridesmaids

A bridesmaid and a maid of honor fight over who’s the bride’s best friend, taking the battle to great lengths.
Judd Apatow made a little revolution in comedies when he cast all female leads to star, but instead of going for the safe path of making a lighter flick “for girls,” he used the incredibly talented comedic cast to act some truly R-rated humor. Be prepared for a “chick flick” for grown women.

Ghostbusters

Three parapsychology professors create an amateur ghost hunting group.

Based on the comic book of the same name, Scott Pilgrim is a brilliant little masterpiece of a comedy, with an incessant rhythm of hilarious visual gags, incredible action, and a story of love and maturing that’s genuinely heartfelt. Add the contagious original music tracks and you have yourself a comedy classic for many viewings to come.

School of Rock

Kicked out of his own band, Dewey Finn fakes his identity to get a job as a substitute teacher, but as he finds a group of incredibly talented young musicians in his class, he creates a new rock band secretly in the school.
It’s hard to think of an actor who felt more at home than Jack Black in School of Rock - the part was written for him by a friend, and he nails it. Having a background in rock music is not necessary for enjoyment, as the movie kindly paves the way for beginners, and it’s hard to resist Jack’s burning passion.

Back To The Future

A nobody LEGO character finds himself at the center of a prophecy dictating he will the savior of the world, but his lack of skill and talent leaves everyone on edge.
Pixar may be consistently delivering beautiful stories, but you will rarely see this much heart and soul packed into an animation - especially one based on LEGOs. The jokes are non-stop funny, the performances are remarkable, it’s endlessly quotable, and by the end, it will punch you right in the childhood.
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-rabbit

Wallace & Gromit, a clumsy man and his companion dog who’s a million times smarter, find themselves solving the mystery behind the plague sabotaging the annual giant vegetable growing fest.
Speaking of animations with heart and soul, this stop-motion masterpiece may be short (85 minutes) but it doesn’t have a second to waste - every minute is beautifully animated, packed with funny gags and clever dialogue, both for adults and children to enjoy. Rotten Tomatoes has this beauty rated at 95%!

The Princess Bride

A princess forced into an unloving marriage must be rescued by a former love interest long thought to be dead.
Similar to “Airplane!” in the sense that it’s a spoof movie mocking a certain genre, this one isn’t nearly as surreal as the first entry on this list, but it benefits from having its own story and being more subtle. If you think “Airplane!” goes a bit too far, “The Princess Bride” may be the spoof you’re looking for.

Judd Apatow’s tale of the 40-year-old virgin was a compelling story from the start, but the excellent cast of comedic actors was let loose to invent whatever jokes they could think of while the cameras were rolling, resulting in a comedy with legit moments of laughter from the cast that the public will surely share.
