The bathroom should always be a practical, accessible and comfortable part of your home. It’s often one of the smallest rooms in the house, but by far one of the most useful, so it comes as no surprise that homeowners want to make it look and feel as great as possible.

And if you’re looking for inspiration on bathroom upgrade ideas, there are plenty of absolutely gorgeous bathroom remodels and upgrades out there. But if you’re here, you’re probably looking for something a bit more accessible. Bathroom upgrades are not the most expensive, but they can stack up pretty high if you start getting big ideas.

But hey, big ideas or not, the truth is that you can revamp, redesign, and redecorate your bathroom for very cheap – sometimes even free. And that’s what I’m focusing on today!

Accent one wall

Painting the entire bathroom takes a lot of effort and a reasonable investment, but you can make a great compromise by painting a single side of the wall. This is called an “accent and it’s an easy way to get yourself a bathroom upgrade on a budget!

Add houseplants

Houseplants are easy additions to almost any room in your house, and the bathroom is no different. The natural humidity in there is actually a pretty nice deal for most plants too. Houseplants make for cleaner air and there are varieties for any taste – whether you want luscious jungle-like combinations or small succulents, you can always find the perfect choice for your space.

Grout refresh

Time for some bathroom upgrade DIY: this one has the advantage of being totally free as long as you have the  tools at your disposal (and some time in your hands).

You can create a homemade grout cleaning solution by mixing:

  • ½ cup of baking soda
  • ¼ cup of hydrogen peroxide
  • 1 teaspoon of dish soap

Apply the mixture on your bathroom grout with an old toothbrush that you no longer have use for and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Finally, rinse with water and dry.

Towel rack

It’s fairly common to leave towels in another room, but why not leave some of your most beautiful ones ready for use in the bathroom on a practical towel rack? This rack can be a simple ladder shelf as seen above, but you can repurpose old furniture for this idea as well.

Repurpose old furniture

Old furniture (or even furniture you get at a used sale) can work wonders for your bathroom. Some pieces can get a quick upgrade with wood refinishing that will make them ready to shine, but even that might not be necessary with the right piece.

And better yet, if you already have old furniture that you can use, it comes off free!

Bathroom backsplash

Just as repainting your entire bathroom is a lot of work, changing the entire tileset is probably even more so. But what you can do is invest on a backsplash for your bathroom – it looks incredibly stylish and comes off much cheaper.

Make it aromatic

Bathrooms are often hard to ventilate properly, so a solution is to make it more aromatic! Make good use of aromatic candles and oils – these double as cute decoration pieces as well as making your bathroom smell wonderful!

New mirror

The mirror is often an underrated piece but it’s by far one of the most important. It’s almost impossible to walk into the bathroom without glancing at it – it’s second nature to us.

Which is why upgrading your mirror to a new one will instantly change the look of your bathroom and will seem like a massive change was made, even if it was just one piece.

Shelf storage

Bathrooms are not big on storage most of the time, but you can easily add some practical shelves with either wooden boxes or open shelves. No need to invest on expensive cabinets – especially since most bathrooms are so limited in space anyway.

These will be enough to add some decorative flair, store towels and other practical itens!

Hardware upgrade

Instead of replacing your entire vanity cabinet, you can upgrade parts of it. If it’s wood, you can repaint. If it’s not, you can at least replace the knobs and handles instead of the whole thing, giving it a new look without changing much at all.
