Every year, Pantone will choose a color of the year from their proprietary catalog, but this year they decided to do something different: they’ve created a new shade of blue called Very Peri.
It’s not the first time they tried something different – for 2021 they chose two colors instead of just one. But this is the first time the color of the year is created from scratch and added to the catalog, instead of choosing from the existing ones.
Let’s take a look at Very Peri – a lovely shade of warm blue that symbolizes the new age that follows a transformative period.
A new color for a new age
The Pantone 17-3938 Very Peri is a shade of blue with violet-red undertones. It’s distinctive for being a warm blue tone, which is quite unique seeing as blue is almost always a cold tonality.
In the Official Pantone Color of the Year presentation, they state:
“We are living in transformative times. PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri is a symbol of the global zeitgeist of the moment and the transition we are going through. As we emerge from an intense period of isolation, our notions and standards are changing, and our physical and digital lives have merged in new ways. Digital design helps us to stretch the limits of reality, opening the door to a dynamic virtual world where we can explore and create new color possibilities."
This is a good segway to discuss the deeper meaning of this color because there’s a lot to unpack there!
The deeper meaning behind Very Peri
It’s clear that the entire world went through massive changes these past few years, and Very Peri was created to symbolize this new direction. But it’s not just about where we are, but also where we’re headed.
The blue hue of technology is represented here too. The way it has evolved and become a part of our lives is notable, but moving forward technology will go through even more remarkable changes. Right now, it’s unclear what long-term impact cryptocurrencies, NFTs, or the metaverse will have, but one thing is certain: things will change.
In a more subjective way though, we have all changed. The pandemic led many of us to work from home for extended periods and only now things are starting to stabilize around the world.
The intent behind Very Peri is to illustrate this new world and the new you that lives here.
Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Institute, summarizes this by saying that:
“The Pantone Color of the Year reflects what is taking place in our global culture, expressing what people are looking for that color can hope to answer."
It’s hard not to be more interested in this color when it has so much meaning behind it. Just comes to show how much colors can shape and influence our surroundings!

How to use Very Peri at home
Blue is already a versatile color that can be used in a number of situations, but Very Peri stands out because it pulls towards the warmer undertone of violet-red, making it easier to use in abundance without the fear of making a room too “cold.
There are very few scenarios in which blue doesn’t fit, giving you a lot of room to experiment with Very Peri.
It can be used liberally as an accent color to contrast against white. In fact, white and blue is a simple but effective combination that always works.
It also pairs very well with a shade of orange (imagine a pair like orange and teal), if you want a bit more color in the mix.
